How big are the apartments?
Studio apartments are 415 square feet and one bedrooms are 541 square feet.
Are there "buy-in" or application fees?
No – except for a $25 non-refundable application fee.
Are there any other fees?
Yes, there is a separate fee for our meals plan, which includes three dinners per week (on Monday, Wednesday and Friday) in our dining room prepared specially by our kitchen staff and served restaurant-style at a table with your fellow residents.
Is there an additional rental fee for a second person in an apartment?
No, but the second person must pay for the meals as well.
How long are the leases on the apartments?
The leases are normally 1-year with an automatic renewal, unless notice is given two months in advance.
What are the age and health requirements for admission?
At least one tenant in the apartment must be 62 or over or disabled. Specific financial requirements will be addressed by the Admissions Application.
Are the apartments furnished?
No, but kitchen appliances and vinyl flooring are supplied.
What happens if I become ill and need temporary help?
We are sensitive to the changing needs of our residents. On a short-term basis, meals will be brought to your apartment.
Should I have to move into a nursing home or die, will my heirs be responsible for the unexpired portion of my lease?
No.
What about pets?
Yes, as long as you comply with our pet policy, which is available upon request.
Is smoking allowed?
No
Is there parking available?
There is one parking space assigned to each apartment where the resident(s) brings a car. An additional parking space is allotted to each apartment where both residents have a car. Parking, however, is limited, and is on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be available at time of move-in.
What about transportation?
A JCHC vehicle takes residents to recreational programs, shopping, etc. on a scheduled basis.

Is there a response system for emergencies?
Yes. All tenants are provided with a pendant which can be worn and activated at any time in any location, sending an emergency signal to building staff.

Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation is located in downtown South Orange, providing access to so many amenities. Within easy walking distance are:
